Mass Surveillance in Berkeley
The City of Berkeley has issued a request for proposals (RFP) for “Public Safety Technology” to acquire “(1) Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR); (2) Fixed Video Surveillance Cameras (Pan-Tilt-Zoom); (3) Drone as First Responder (DFR); (4) Field-Deployed Drones (Unmanned Aerial Systems); (5) Community Video Stream Integration; and (6) Investigative Software.” This RFP is covers everything that City Council chose not to approve in a proposed contract expansion through Flock Safety in May.
It is clear that this RFP is being treated as a procedural and bureaucratic step to secure the very specific services pitched by Flock Safety, rather than an opportunity for the City to actually consider its technology needs. More details will come after the August 20 due date for proposals.
Freedom From Flock Fest
As part of the National Week of Action Against ALPRs, join community members for the Freedom from Flock Fest on August 21 in Berkeley.
The Fest will start with a march from 4th St & Virginia St (5:30 PM) ending at Strawberry Creek Park, followed by a rally and festivities (6:30-8:00 PM).
